Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday at the Montpelier Races
Red, white, and blue will be on full display at this year's Montpelier Hunt Races. The 2026 Tailgate Contest theme is "Happy Birthday, America!" We're inviting tailgaters to go all out in honor of the nation's 250th anniversary.
Decorate your spread, dress the part, and turn your tailgate into a star-spangled birthday party. Whether you go classic backyard cookout or full patriotic extravaganza, the goal is simple: celebrate 250 years of America in style on one of Virginia's most beautiful fall afternoons.
A Tradition Worth Showing Up For
The Tailgate Contest is one of the most beloved traditions at the Montpelier Hunt Races, and it has only gotten better with age. In the early years, the contest ran without a theme.
“The same person won several years in a row. The wins were all very well deserved, but people were getting discouraged about entering, so we asked the organizer to forego the contest and join us as a judge. Best idea ever!" — Executive Director Martha Strawther.
About a decade ago, annual themes were introduced, and the response has been extraordinary. Participants love the challenge and the creative direction that comes with it. One of the most memorable entries came during "Our Bond from Across the Pond," a theme honoring the sport's English roots and transatlantic racing heritage. Several geographic themes followed, each bringing out something new in the Montpelier tailgating spirit.
The Hat Contest Is On Too
The Hat Contest has always been a highlight of race day, and this year the 250th birthday theme is inspiring some of the most inventive headwear we've ever seen. Last year's Monopoly theme brought entries that used the actual game board as a hat brim. America's birthday is a canvas just as wide.

How Judging Works
This year's judging panel represents our Tailgate Sponsor, Wine & Country Life. Judges will be looking for originality, enthusiasm, and how fully your tailgate captures the birthday party spirit.
Prizes for both the Tailgate Contest and Hat Contest are generously donated by our Official Hotel Partners: The Forum Hotel and The Inn at Willow Grove.
How to Enter
There is no entry fee. To compete in the Tailgate Contest or Hat Contest, simply contact the race office ahead of time so our judges know where to find you on race day.
