A First Timer's Guide to the Montpelier Hunt Races
Set on the historic grounds of James Madison's Montpelier in Orange County, Virginia, the Montpelier Hunt Races have welcomed guests for over 90 years. If this is your first time, you're in for something special. Here's what to know before you go.
What is Steeplechase Racing?
The sport traces its roots to cross-country races where riders navigated the countryside toward a distant church steeple. Today, sanctioned by the National Steeplechase Association (NSA), it means horses and riders flying over fences across open turf. At Montpelier, that means seven races winding through hills and tree-lined stretches where the horses sometimes disappear from view entirely. That's all part of the charm.
Where to Watch
If you don't have a reserved tailgate spot, don't worry. There's open space along the rail, and Backstretch Park is a great place to settle in. Grab a Race Program on your way in (just $2 each, or three for $5) and you'll have everything you need to follow along.
What to Wear
The Races are one of the great occasions to dress for. Tweeds, vests, scarves, and a statement hat. Steeplechase attire has a tradition all its own, and Montpelier wears it well. Plan for layers, since November mornings on the Virginia countryside start crisp and golden before the afternoon opens up and warms beautifully. The grounds are open turf, so boots are always a great call.
Arrive Early and Plan Ahead
Montpelier Station is an easy drive from Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, and Richmond. Every car needs a parking pass, so grab yours before race day.
Getting there early is its own reward. The Jack Russell Terrier Races and the 2nd Annual Corgi Races start at 10:15 a.m. The Side Saddle Exhibition, the Hat Contest, and the Tailgate Contest fill out the day beautifully. There's also a vendor marketplace with clothing, jewelry, gifts, and Montpelier merchandise. The raffle from Schwarzschild Keller and George is worth a ticket or two as well.
Wagering and The Social Side
There's no parimutuel wagering at the Races, but friendly pools and side bets are a time-honored part of the day. Bring small bills and join in.
For a more elevated experience, the Pinnacle Club puts you in the President's Tent with reserved seating, breakfast, lunch, a full bar, and closed-circuit race coverage. You'll also be right by the Paddock, where horses are saddled and jockeys mount up before each race, which is well worth seeing.
You’re Among Friends
People at the Races love to talk about the Races. If it comes up that it's your first time, you'll likely hear a story or three. The Montpelier Hunt Races were started by Marion duPont Scott when Montpelier was her private estate, and they've grown into one of Virginia's most beloved fall traditions. Proceeds support The Montpelier Foundation and the preservation of James Madison's historic home.
We're glad you're here. Welcome to the Races.
