An Annual Tradition in Central Virginia

Held annually on the first Saturday in November, the Montpelier Hunt Races are the largest tourism-related event in Orange County —drawing more than 15,000 visitors to the Central Virginia home of the fourth U.S. President and creating a residual economic impact in Orange County and the surrounding community.

The Races’ Community Impact

Through ticket, tent and parking sales, along with generous sponsor support, the Races have donated nearly $1 million in unrestricted funds to James Madison’ Montpelier, while also supporting community partners including: the Orange Volunteer Fire Company, Lake of the Woods Fire and Rescue, Orange County High School JROTC and the retired racehorses of the Virginia Thoroughbred Project. Additional non-profit beneficiaries of the Races include the Temple Gwathmey Foundation which works to preserve and advance the sport through education, health and safety, and The Steeplechase Fund, which supports jockeys, grooms and trainers in need.

Guided by Local Leadership

The MSEF is governed by a 10-member volunteer board, comprised of local horsemen and women, business professionals, and community leaders. David Perdue currently serves as the chair of the MSEF Board of Directors. The organization is based in a Dupont-era house on Route 20 near the Montpelier Station Post Office.
